El Salvador groups accuse Pacific Rim of 'assault on democratic governance'

The government of El Salvador is being sued in an international tribunal by Pacific Rim, a mining company now owned by OceanaGold, based in Australia. The company seeks millions of dollars from the government over their refusal to issue a permit for environmental reasons.

This article published by The Guardian reports that more than 300 organisations, including AFTINET, have signed a letter accusing Pacific Rim of using the international tribunal to "subvert a democratic nationwide debate over mining and environmental health".
