RCEP should not allow corporations to sue governments over environmental regulation

Medical tests found that hundreds of people living near an Australian -owned mine in Thailand had high levels of toxic substances in their blood, and researchers criticised the company’s lack of community consultation about local water contamination. But when the Thai government acted to close the mine, the company used investor rights in the Thai-Australia free trade agreement to claim millions in compensation for lost profits.
