Send a message to Labor to oppose the TPP by October 15
24 September 2018: There has been a massive response against the Labor caucus majority decision on September 11 to support the TPP-11 implementing legislation, with thousands of messages sent to Labor MPs and Senators asking them to vote against the implementing legislation. The Greens, Centre Alliance and other cross-benchers oppose the legislation, and Labor could form a majority in the Senate to defeat it.
We thank those Labor MPs and Senators who spoke out against the TPP-11 in parliament and at caucus meetings. We also thank Greens and Centre Alliance MPs who are opposing the legislation.
The TPP gives rights to foreign companies to sue the Australian Government should they legislate on or uphold protections on workers’ rights, healthcare, indigenous rights, environmental protections, or other social issues. It also increases numbers of temporary workers vulnerable to exploitation without testing if local workers are available.
AFTINET’s media release on the September 18 Senate Standing Committee Report on the TPP-11 strongly criticised the Labor majority report which said yes to the implementing legislation despite admitting it was contrary to Labor policy.
The legislation has passed through the House of Representatives, and will go before the Senate in the next sitting week of September 15, after the Senate legislation committee report on October 10.
Unions and community groups mobilising members
The ACTU, AMWU, ETU, AMIEU Newcastle & Northern Branch, MUA and National Union of Workers condemned the Labor caucus decision. The ETU has also produced a critical short social media video on the TPP-11 which we ask you to share.
On September 16 GetUp sent a social media message to its supporters urging them to send a message to Senators to say no to the TPP-11 implementing legislation.
ActionAid sent also a social media message to its supporters urging them to send a message to Senators to say no to the TPP-11 implementing legislation.
