Call for fundamental rethink of trade policy as NZ rallies against TPP

10 September 2016
NZ law professor and outspoken TPP critic Jane Kelsey has called for a complete rethink of trade policy as rallies against the TPP occur around the country today.
Her article, published in the NZ Herald, is in response to a so-called “refresh” of the country’s trade policy led by their new Trade Minister Todd McClay. She writes:
"The groundswell of opposition to the TPP reflects a crisis of legitimacy in secretly negotiated agreements that are seen as pro-corporate and anti-democratic. Rallies for Democracy around the country on Saturday that link the TPP to climate action, te Tiriti o Waitangi, social justice and workers' rights are the latest manifestation of that disquiet.”
