Trade Minister reviews India FTA

23 August 2016

Trade Minister Steve Ciobo has called a pause and review of the trade deal the government is negotiating with India, according to reports in The Australian today (behind a paywall).

The article points to India’s reluctance to reduce tariffs and protectionism as reasons for the review. India has also recently sought to terminate 57 investment treaties and has introduced a new model for investment treaties with a limited version of ISDS.
Recently, the discovery of deadly asbestos from imported materials shone a spotlight on the negotiations, with the CFMEU construction union calling for a halt  to the trade talks. India is the world’s second biggest manufacturer of products with asbestos.
