Merits of PACER-plus debated in Auckland

18 August 2016
A recent debate on the merits of PACER-plus has been held in Auckland following the recent news that PNG has exited the negotiations.
Associate Professor Yvonne Underhill-Sem from Auckland University criticised the lack of publicly available detail and pointed out that Australian and New Zealand insurers, telecommunications companies and construction firms still dominate industry in the Pacific.
"So while the government on the one hand is negotiating from a government point of view it opens up the door for the self interest of Australian and New Zealand companies," she said.
It was previously hoped that the ministerial meeting scheduled in Christchurch next week would finalise the negotiations, but this is now looking less likely.
